Don't Be That Guy
Throughout the semester, we have talked a lot about what we think of Italians and our stereotypes of them. So, for our final project, Emma and I thought it would be interesting to switch that around and see what Europeans, and more specifically Italians, think of Americans and the stereotypes they have of us. We did a lot of research on how Europeans view Americans, and from that we came up with a hand out of dos and don'ts for future study abroad students, specifically those going to Italy.
Our first thing we did for our research was look at how prominent American pop culture is in Europe. We looked at various articles and studies, as well as iTunes charts to find all this information. We did this to see where Europeans may be getting these perceptions of Americans from and how they form their stereotypes of us. We also looked at multiple sources and studies that had how many Europeans approved of American pop culture as well as some of their stereotypes of us. The final part of our research was interviews. We interviewed people that we were interacting with throughout the semester because we thought that was the best way to get an honest answer, instead of asking random people on the street. We interviewed Italian students we had class with, the staff at the restaurant down the street as well as the staff at the café down the street. With these people, we interviewed people of all ages, young, middle aged, and the older population.
From all the research, we came up with "Don't Be That Guy". We think that if students had access to this handout before they came abroad or right when they arrived in the country they were studying that they would have an easier time merging two different cultures. We have been in contact with the right people in order for this to happen.
